Oregano's backstory
This refreshing herb is thought to have originated on the mountainsides of Italy, Greece, and other Mediterranean countries. Oregano’s name is a combination of the Greek words “oros” and “ganos” which translate to “joy of the mountains.” Like many herbs, oregano has a rich history that can be traced back thousands of years! During Greek and Roman times, it was used for headaches, as a poison antidote, and to help with respiratory conditions. During the Middle Ages, oregano leaves (which is what the essential oil is distilled from) were often carried as good luck charms to promote happiness and tranquility.
Hundreds of years later, oregano would primarily be known as a flavouring agent for Italian food.
